Cerebral palsy is a group of conditions that affect movement and posture. This is usually caused by damage to the developing brain before birth. Symptoms of this condition appear during infancy or preschool years and vary from very mild to severe. Children who suffer from cerebral palsy have exaggerated reactions.
The Mayo Clinic says symptoms of the condition may include irregular posture, movements that cannot be controlled, inability to walk steadily, or some combination of these. You may also notice that the arms, legs, and torso look floppy or their muscles may become stiff, a condition known as spasticity.
Cerebral Palsy Symptoms
Symptoms of cerebral palsy may vary from person to person. For some, the condition may affect the entire body, however, in others, symptoms may only affect one or two limbs or one side of the body. Here, take a look at the different symptoms of cerebral palsy.
Characteristics of speed and coordination
- stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexes, also called spasticity
- Variation in muscle tone, such as being either too stiff or too floppy
- Stiff muscles with regular reflexes, known as rigidity
- Lack of balance and muscle coordination, known as ataxia
- Jerky movements that cannot be controlled are known as tremors
- slow, stuttering movements
- Favoring one side of the body, such as reaching with only one hand or dragging one leg while crawling.
- trouble walking
- Trouble with fine motor skills, such as buttoning clothes or picking up utensils.
Symptoms of speech and eating habits.
- delayed speech development
- trouble speaking
- trouble sucking, chewing, or eating
- Drooling or difficulty swallowing.
developmental symptoms
- Delay in reaching motor skill milestones, such as sitting or crawling
- learning disabilities
- intellectual disability
- Development was delayed, resulting in a smaller than expected size.
other symptoms
- seizures, which are symptoms of epilepsy
- hearing impairment
- Vision problems and changes in eye movements
- Trouble feeling sensations like pain or touch
- Bladder and bowel problems, including constipation and urinary incontinence
- Mental health conditions, such as emotional conditions and behavioral issues.
Causes of Cerebral Palsy
This condition is caused by irregular brain development or damage to the developing brain. This usually happens before the baby is born, but it can also happen at birth or in infancy. There are many factors that can cause changes in brain development. Here, take a look at some of these factors.
- Gene changes that result in genetic conditions or differences in brain development
- Maternal infections that affect the unborn baby
- stroke, which disrupts the blood supply to the developing brain
- bleeding in the womb or in the newborn’s brain
- Infant infections that cause swelling in or around the brain
- A traumatic injury to an infant’s head, such as from a motor vehicle accident, fall, or physical trauma
- Lack of oxygen to the brain is related to difficult labor or delivery.
