Along with the festive season, pollution and health related threats have also started increasing for the people living in Delhi. Apart from the rising air pollution levels in Delhi, Yamuna river was seen covered with a thick layer of white foam. This has raised concerns among environmentalists and officials as several videos have emerged on social media showing large sections of the river covered in white foam, looking like clouds above the water. Pollution in the river is a serious health concern as it creates many health risks including respiratory problems and skin related problems. With pollution levels worrying and major festivals like Chhath Puja around the corner, experts have urged authorities to address the issue and take necessary steps. If this foam continues in the water of Yamuna river, then people living in Delhi may have to face major health problems.
According to environmentalists, this pungent foam contains high levels of ammonia and phosphates, which pose serious health risks including respiratory and skin problems.
The foam covering Delhi’s Yamuna river is a sign of severe water pollution, which poses multiple health risks to Delhiites. This foam is mainly caused by untreated industrial effluents, chemical wastes and sewage discharges, which together form a toxic layer on the surface of the water. Here are some common problems that can occur due to polluted water.
Respiratory problems:
The chemicals in the foam release compounds into the air, which can cause respiratory problems. People living near or visiting the river may experience symptoms such as coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing. People already suffering from health problems like asthma or bronchitis need to be extra cautious.
Skin irritation and rashes due to polluted water:
Bathing or washing hands with polluted water can cause skin irritation, rashes and infection. The frothy waters of the Yamuna contain high levels of phosphates, detergents and other harmful chemicals that can cause allergies or worsen existing skin conditions like eczema.
Waterborne diseases may increase:
Foam contains high levels of organic contaminants, which can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria and viruses in the water. People who use this contaminated water are at risk of developing waterborne diseases like cholera, diarrhea, and even jaundice.
Exposure to chemicals:
Chemicals, including heavy metals such as mercury and lead, can be absorbed into the human body through skin contact or consumption of river water. Long-term exposure to these chemicals can cause chronic health problems, including liver, kidney and nervous system damage.
