How do ultra-processed foods cause health problems?
Experts say ultra-processed foods lead to health problems, especially heart disease and type 2 diabetes. People who regularly consume foods high in calories, sodium and preservatives have lower quality diets overall and a higher body mass index than people who eat fewer ultra-processed foods. The most commonly consumed ultra-processed foods include:
- sugar-sweetened beverages
- Processed meats such as hot dogs, sausages, and deli meats
- carbonated soda drinks such as Coca-Cola
Doctors say eating ultra-processed foods increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by at least 12 percent. UPF is also associated with a 21 percent higher risk of death from any cause, obesity, and a 40-66 percent higher risk of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack and stroke.
Other health concerns associated with these foods include sleep problems, depression, asthma, high cholesterol, and gastrointestinal problems. Doctors are particularly concerned about the sharp rise in colon cancer cases among more youthful people, which some suggest is linked to their increased intake of ultra-processed foods.
While UFP can be enjoyed in moderation, doctors still recommend prioritizing healthy foods.
