Rajasthan It is famous for its deserts, palaces and rich heritage but is located just 80 kilometers from Jaipur. sambarIndia’s largest inland saltwater lake. Spread over 90 square kilometres, and its banks touch three districts of Rajasthan – Jaipur, Ajmer And Nagaur – This destination offers incredible natural and cultural experiences, without the crowds of Rajasthan’s more popular destinations. It barely has enough water to call it a lake, but as the monsoons arrive, the lake turns into a pink wetland, and flamingos find their way here.

Sambhar Salt Lake Its rich history dates back 5,000 years, with evidence of ancient salt extraction by early civilizations such as the Indus Valley. Over time, the lake became a major salt production center and a valuable resource for local dynasties, receiving royal patronage from Rajput rulers who recognized its strategic and economic importance.

Things to do in Sambhar in 24 hours

Visit Sambhar Salt Lake

The main attraction, Sambhar Lake is spread over 90 square kilometers and produces about 2,10,000 tonnes of salt every year. The lake was designated a Ramsar site in 1990, and is one of the sites for conservation action under the Indian Wetland Conservation Programme. It is one of the two Ramsar sites in Rajasthan – the other being Keoladeo National Bird Sanctuary in Bharatpur. Walking across the salt lake, especially during sunrise or sunset, is an outdoor experience. If you are an avid bird lover, visiting Sambhar Lake is best between October and February.
Sambhar Salts Limited: Witness the salt making process in one of the oldest salt factories in the country. The lake has been an important source of salt for centuries, with production techniques passed down through generations.

Shakambari Devi Temple

Located on the banks of the lake, the Shakambari Devi Temple is dedicated to Shakambari, the goddess of nourishment, who is believed to have blessed the region with a salt-rich lake. It is believed to be 2,500 years old and is one of the three Shaktipeeths dedicated to Goddess Shakambhari. Legend has it that Shakambari Devi turned the area into a brackish lake to keep it away from the greedy eyes of the surrounding kingdoms.

Devyani Temple and Kund

Devayani Temple Also called ‘Chhota Pushkar’, it is believed that Devayani (daughter of sage Shukracharya – Guru of demons) was married to King Yayati. Local people say that this temple is the place where Mughal Emperor Akbar married Queen Jodha. Baba Jageshwar Temple is one of the four ancient Shiva temples on the banks of Devyani Kund, where it is believed that no one has been able to ascertain the depth of this Linga till date.

Ride the Sambhar Heritage Train

A unique experience in Sambhar is the small heritage train ride operated by Sambhar Heritage Resort. The unique train takes passengers across the lake and through the salt flats, offering a unique view of the landscape. While the train primarily serves the purpose of transporting salt, you can also take an exciting ride and get closer to the process.

Best time to visit Sambhar

October to March is the ideal time to visit Sambhar, as the weather is cool and migratory birds reside. During this period, the lake fills with water, and flamingos and other migratory birds flock to the area. Summers in Sambhar can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C.

Sambhar is about a two-hour drive from Jaipur. Travelers can also reach Sambhar by train, as it is well connected by rail to major cities like Jaipur, Ajmer and Delhi. The nearest airport is Jaipur International Airport, from where one can take a taxi or bus to Sambhar.
