Being a good host means taking care of all your guests, right? Well, one Redditor felt awkward at a BBQ hosted by his former friends. Sharing her experience, the 37-year-old said that this was the first time she was invited by âex-boyfriendâs friendsâ to join them for pre-drinks/BBQ. Before continuing, her boyfriend casually mentioned, âHer friend sent a message and said the host feels bad because theyâre having a barbeque and there might not be enough food for everyone, so if âIf we see food lying around, donât feel bad about it.â
At first, the Redditor thought it was cool and âassumed they already ate and we were just joining in after that.â But when they arrived, things changed. It immediately became clear that no one had touched the food! Of the 12 invited guests, only eight sat down for dinner while the other four hung around. He recalled, âWhen the meal time came, 8 of them sat around a well-kept table and started eating without making eye contact with us, while we stood outside the table talking I thought it was very strange, didnât I? It was strange because we were actually starving!â

The story does not end here. The Redditor shared that when the meal was done, the host got up and said âGuys, please help yourself!â To the leftovers. The woman found this strange and when her ex-husband went and brought some food on a plate and said âCome eatâ, she shared that âshe couldnât bring herself to do that. I donât even know these people.â And it was very uncomfortable. I politely said, âNo, thanks!â And my ex got so upset by this reaction that we actually broke up. Went. ).â
She added, âThey basically said we would just eat together at the street festival, so I was upset that they put me in that situation and then blamed me for deciding not to eat and get snacks on the street. Were you angry?â

Feeling shocked and confused, the Redditor, who is from Canada, wondered, âIs this culturally normal behavior for some people? I live in Canada, and I never eat in front of a guest in my home.â Canât eat or feed them but is this normal behavior for some people? Was I rude or wrong for doing this? Or was he being mad and rude to me for declining the food? feeling like a person Was?â
The post went viral on Reddit with over 13K upvotes and 1.5K comments.
One comment read, âNo, this is so weird. Especially with guests being singled out to only have leftovers while the âfirstâ crew got their choice?? I donât know anyone who Will do that.â
Another said, âIâm with you. I donât eat until everyone else at my house has made their plates and I always make sure thereâs enough food.â
A third wrote, âThis sounds like a mess. Why would you invite people to a barbecue you canât feed?â
Another chimed in, âWhat kind of culture would eating in front of others be anyway??? So weird and rude, I would have just walked away if I saw them all sitting down to eat in front of you guys.â
