Lukla Airport, Nepal
Located near Mount Everest, Lukla Airport in Nepal is the major airport for anyone traveling to Mount Everest. It is located between mountains with a very short runway. Therefore, descending here can be as dramatic as climbing the famous mountain.
Wellington International Airport, New Zealand
This airport has a single runway of 6,351 feet. The scary thing is that it seems to begin and end in water. The tricky route through mountainous terrain is known for its strong winds, making landing extremely difficult.
Tioman Airport, Malaysia
Landing on Tioman Island requires pilots to approach the mountain directly and then make a quick 90-degree turn to line up with the runway. A one-way landing must be very fast as there is a cliff at the end of the runway that drops off very steeply into the water.
Svalbard Airport, Norway
This 8,000 feet runway is built on ice. Below the runway, you will find culverts allowing water to flow off the mountain. Due to lack of runway lighting, flights are permitted only during daylight hours.
