A new law aimed at enhancing national security has come into force on December 2. The law orders accommodation providers and car rental companies to collect and share detailed customer information with the Spanish government. Before this order comes into force, hotels in Spain, the second most popular destination for tourists in Europe with more than 82 million visitors in 2023, will ask guests for their ID card or passport details.

When checking into your accommodation, you must provide the following:

• gender
• nationality
• passport number
• date of birth
• home address
• Landline phone number (if applicable)
• Mobile phone number
• email address
• Number of passengers in your party
• Relationship with other travelers (if applicable, especially minors)

If you are renting a car, you must also provide:

• driver’s license information
• Payment Information
• Vehicle GPS data (if available)

Not just travelers, even Spanish residents will be subject to these new rules when traveling within the country or renting a vehicle.
