In a move to revive its tourism sector, which had suffered a severe blow during the COVID-19 border restrictions, China has announced an update to its visa-free transit policy, giving travelers a new reason to explore the Middle Kingdom. Eligible foreign travelers can now enjoy up to 240 hours or 10 days visa-free stay in China, a significant jump from the previous limit of 72 to 144 hours. The announcement made by the National Immigration Administration (NIA) through its official WeChat account has already created a stir in the travel community.

For citizens of 54 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia and Brazil, this policy offers a hassle-free way to experience China while visiting a third destination. With access provided through 60 ports in 24 provinces, the visa-free program ensures that travelers can explore China’s diverse cities – from the neon-lit skyscrapers of Shanghai to the ancient wonders of Xi’an – designated Following the areas.
According to reports, inbound tourism has seen a promising recovery after China welcomed travelers in 2023. The numbers speak volumes: The third quarter of 2024 saw 8.2 million overseas visits to China, representing a 48.8% increase year-on-year. The visa-free policy has played a significant role in this resurgence, accounting for more than half of these visits. According to NIA, the number of passengers availing this policy has increased by an impressive 78.6% compared to last year.
