The city, along with other parts of Himachal Pradesh, have turned into major destinations for travelers looking to escape the snowfall this Christmas season. Hotel bookings have increased by 30% and the occupancy rate has crossed 70%, according to MK Seth, president of Shimla Hotel and Tourism Stakeholders Association, who told PTI how the hills are drawing crowds this year.

According to the latest report, 223 roads including three national highways are closed due to snowfall. The affected routes include vital links between Attari and Leh, Sanj to Aut in Kullu and Khab Sangam in Kinnaur. 145 roads were reported closed in Shimla alone, while other affected areas included Kullu (25 roads) and Mandi (20 roads). Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh assured the tourists that efforts are on to clear the roads, adding that 268 machinery including snow blowers have been deployed for the work.

Officials are urging visitors to follow travel advice, avoid driving on snow-covered roads unless absolutely necessary and use only 4×4 vehicles in slippery areas.

Reports on Monday said that four people died in accidents due to vehicles slipping on icy roads in different parts of Himachal Pradesh. Due to heavy snowfall, essential services have also been disrupted. More than 356 transformers have stopped working, causing power outages in many areas. Reportedly, efforts are underway to restore power and clear roads, but travelers should be prepared for temporary inconveniences.
