India’s exports of organic food products reached $447.73 million in the first eight months of this financial year (FY25), and are set to surpass last year’s export figures, Parliament was informed on Monday. In the current financial year, the total volume of organic food products exports reached 263,050 metric tonnes (MT) till November 25 and in the last financial year (FY24) exports of organic food products were worth $494.80 million, Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, Navneet Singh said. Bittu told the Lok Sabha in a written reply. The ministry has not allocated any specific funds to encourage industries to produce organic products.
However, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry provides financial assistance to its member exporters including exporters of organic food products. Moreover, APEDA is implementing National Program for Organic Production (NPOP). The program includes recognition of certification bodies, standards for organic production, promotion of organic farming and marketing, etc.
The total number of organic-certified processing units under the National Organic Production Program in India is 1,016. In September, APEDA announced a partnership with global retail chain Lulu Group International (LLC) to showcase a wide range of certified Indian organic products in its stores in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). APEDA will facilitate connections between farmer producer organizations (FPOs), farmer producer companies (FPCs), cooperative societies and organic producers including Lulu Group in India. This will ensure that Indian organic products reach a wider global audience.
The authority is dedicated to promoting Indian agricultural and processed food exports. The minister told the House that the agency works closely with Indian embassies to organize B2B exhibitions in various countries, explore new potential markets and promote natural, organic and Geographical Indication (GI) tagged agricultural products.
