India is home to some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes, from the towering Himalayas to the lush Western Ghats. But if there is one road that distinguishes itself in beauty and tranquility, it is the road that is aptly nicknamed the ā€œRoad to Heaven.ā€ a distance of 32 kilometers through Rann of Kutch This is not a normal road. It is a sensory experience. On either side, you have the infinite expanse of the Rann of Kutch, contrasting with the blue of the water touching the asphalt. And you are in the middle, watching from a distance the shepherds going on their daily route.

Road to Heaven: From Khavra Dholavira

Till a few years ago, the distance of Dholavira from Bhuj, the capital of Kutch, was about 240 km. To mitigate this, in 2019, a road connecting Khavda to Dholavira, which cuts across the Rann, was commissioned. The 30-km extension was launched just in time for the G20 summit in 2024. Although the road is not yet complete, a one-way lane takes travelers from Khavra to Dholavira, the largest remains of the Harappan civilization in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that provides tourists with information about this rich city. Does.
The road is part of the 278 km long national highway from Ghaduli to Santalpur, a portion of which passes through the white desert. Here, you will see the reflection of the sky in the water; If you have a drone, there’s probably no better place to use it than in India. The Rann was once a shallow part of the Arabian Sea, until geological changes led to its disconnection from the sea. Today, during the monsoon, the Rann is flooded with water, creating a white salty land; During the rest of the year it is an endless expanse of salt desert. The road passes through this landscape, with water on both sides of the single-lane highway. For now, you can park your car/bike, step off the gravel and dip your feet in the water.

Although the ecological impact of building a road in such a pristine landscape is questionable, there is no doubt that it will encourage more travelers to head to Dholavira. Dholavira is an ancient Harappan city located in the Rann of Kutch. This well-preserved archaeological site offers a glimpse into the life of the Indus Valley Civilization. The layout of the city, with its fortified walls, granaries and residential areas, provides valuable insights into the urban planning and social structure of this ancient culture. With Dholavira, Gujarat aims to promote archaeological tourism.
