According to reports, the Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has recommended a complete ban on private vehicles in Delhi. Sariska Tiger ReserveThe move, aimed at minimising the adverse impacts of vehicular traffic on the reserve, is being seen as a vital step towards preserving the fragile ecosystem and ensuring the long-term survival of tigers and other wildlife.
According to a report submitted to the Supreme Court in July, 75,353 private vehicles have entered the STR in 2023-24. The CEC report highlights the alarming impact of unregulated vehicle traffic on tiger breeding and overall wildlife behaviour. The constant noise and disturbance caused by vehicles have been identified as significant stressors for tigers, affecting their hunting patterns, mating and cub rearing. And this traffic mostly leads to the temples inside the reserve, especially the Pandupol temple.

To address the accessibility issue, the committee has proposed the introduction of electric shuttle buses as an alternative mode of transport within the reserve. This will not only reduce noise pollution but also provide a more sustainable and eco-friendly option for visitors. Other possible options such as tramways, elevated roads or even motorable tunnels have also been suggested for further consideration. Additionally, to protect tigers and local communities from the growing threats of poaching and human-wildlife conflict, the CEC has also recommended the formation of a dedicated special tiger protection force for Sariska.
