The Government of India is exploring the option of building a 7-8 km long twin-tube tunnel through the Kela Pass. According to media reports, a proposal in this regard has been made by the Union Territory Ladakh Administration. If this initiative is taken forward, the tunnel will ensure hassle-free travel of visitors and the army from Leh to Pangong.
The report further states that the tunnel aims to provide all-weather connectivity. This will also increase mobility for civilians and military personnel. Most importantly, it is expected to reduce travel time between Leh and Pangong LakeThe Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently discussed the proposal with an estimated budget of around Rs 6,000 crore.
The Ladakh administration first highlighted the need for such a tunnel in 2022, proposing development of infrastructure at four strategic passes: Khardung La, Fotu La, Namika La and Kela Pass. The objectives of these projects are to promote tourism, encourage economic growth and ensure smooth military operations. If approved, the Kela Pass Tunnel will be in line with broader strategic goals to improve access into Ladakh. Its construction will increase the connectivity of the area and national security will also be strengthened.
At present, discussions are underway to determine whether the Border Roads Organization (BRO) or the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) under the Ministry of Road Transport will build the tunnel, which aims to provide all facilities. Weather Connectivity.
