Guwahati, often called the gateway to Northeast India, offers a glimpse of the fascinating blend of culture, spirituality and natural beauty for which the region is famous. Nestled along the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River, this bustling city has a slower pace, allowing you to enjoy its many temples, vibrant markets, sightseeing and rich food scene at your leisure. But if you’re here for Diljit’s concert, extend your trip a little and this 48-hour itinerary will help you experience the best of Guwahati.

day 1

Morning

Visit Kamakhya Temple

Start your day with a visit to the iconic Kamakhya Temple, one of the most revered Shakti Peethas in India. It is believed that the yoni (female genitalia) of Goddess Sati fell here; This makes Kamakhya one of the most revered centers of Tantric practices. A unique festival called Ambubachi Mela is also celebrated in the temple, in which the goddess is worshiped during her menstrual period. Situated on Neelachal hill, this temple also offers a picturesque view of the Brahmaputra river.

Explore Umananda Island

One of Guwahati’s top attractions, Umanand Island, also known as Peacock Island, is a short ferry ride away from the city. The island is home to the Umananda Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The island is also home to the rare golden langur monkeys and a variety of birds.

Afternoon

Assam State Museum

Dive into the cultural history of Assam at the Assam State Museum. The museum has a rich collection of sculptures, manuscripts and textiles, providing an insight into the tribal culture, archeology and history of the region.

Evening

Guwahati Planetarium

If you are traveling with kids, Guwahati Planetarium should be on your itinerary. Inaugurated in 1994, it is India’s oldest and one of the city’s top attractions. Located on MG Road, it offers an immersive experience in astronomy with state-of-the-art projection systems and dome theaters showcasing astronomical shows and space exploration. Visitors can also enjoy educational programs, interactive exhibits, and sky observations.

day 2

Morning boat ride on Brahmaputra

Start your second day with an early morning boat ride on the Brahmaputra River. The calm water and cool breeze make it a perfect place to view the beauty of the river at dawn. It is also a good time for bird watching, as migratory birds can be seen around this time of the year.

Visit Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

A 45-minute drive from the city will take you to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, often called a “mini Kaziranga” for its large population of one-horned rhinoceros. We highly recommend pre-booking an exciting jungle safari to see these majestic creatures along with other wildlife like leopards, wild boars and a variety of birds.

Evening

Shop for souvenirs at the Fancy Market

No trip to Guwahati is complete without a visit to the Fancy Bazaar. Known as the center of the city’s shopping scene, this bustling market is perfect for purchasing souvenirs such as Assamese silk, bamboo products and traditional jewellery.

Sunset Cruise and Dinner on Alfresco Grand

The best way to end your Guwahati excursion is with a relaxing sunset cruise on the Alfresco Grand. This luxury cruise offers a perfect view of the sunset over the Brahmaputra River, along with a delightful dinner of Assamese and North Indian cuisine.
