It has two floors – the upper floor is called Balekilla while the lower floor is called Machi. Apart from the Shiva temple, the fort offers beautiful panoramic views of its surroundings. Now, a famous tourist attraction, this fort is also a place of major historical importance near Pune. The fort has witnessed many historical milestones and has been mentioned many times in the rebellions by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha Empire against the Adil Shahi, Mughals and Bijapur Sultanate. It is also identified as one of the twin forts (Purandar and Vajragad forts).

It is located in the Sahyadri mountain range at an altitude of 1387 feet above sea level. This fort is located in the western part of the Vajragarh Fort. This place attracts a large number of visitors for weekend holidays, nature exploration and adventure activities. Some of its features are as follows:

• The fort has two levels. The lower level is called Machi and the upper level consists of Dilli Darwaza and Balekila.
• Delhi Gate and the grand Bale Fort entrance. Several architectural features demonstrate the fort’s strategic importance and defensive capabilities.
• Other features of the fort include the Rameshwara Temple, Bini Darwaza and the Purandeshwar Temple.
• The fort also contains the remains of ancient palaces, granaries and reservoirs that speak of its past glory.

The fort’s architecture shows a mix of different styles including Maratha, Mughal and Islamic influences. This comes from its various rulers over the centuries. It is believed that a German prisoner named Dr. Hermann Goetz wrote extensively about the fort while he was imprisoned there. Later despite his German origins, Dr. Goetz published his works and worked under the British administration.
