Weddings are often grand celebrations of love and tradition, but for one family in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh, the happy occasion turned into a nightmare. Angered by the slight delay in serving the food, the groom left the ceremony, leaving the bride and her family in shock. To add insult to injury, he married his cousin sister the same day. The incident has forced the bride’s family to demand justice and grapple with the financial and emotional trauma.

A strange incident came to light in Hamidpur village of Chandauli when groom Mehtab walked out of his wedding due to alleged delay in food service. According to the bride, her marriage with Mehtab was fixed seven months ago and preparations were in full swing.

When the marriage procession reached his house on 22 December, Mahtab and his relatives were given a warm welcome. However, tensions escalated when his friends allegedly started teasing him due to a slight delay in serving the food. Enraged, Mehtab and his family allegedly abused and assaulted the bride’s family before leaving the venue.

Despite attempts at mediation by the village elders, Mehtab refuses to go ahead with the marriage. A few hours later, the bride’s family learns that she has married her cousin. Shocked and angry, he contacted the police, pleading for justice.

In her complaint, the bride’s mother claimed that the family suffered a loss of Rs 7 lakh due to the wedding expenses and arrangements for 200 guests. Additionally, Rs 1.5 lakh was handed over to the groom’s family a few hours before the ceremony.

The bride and her family later took the matter to Superintendent of Police (SP) Aditya Laghe, following which mediation took place between the two parties. Eventually, a written agreement was signed stating that Rs 1.61 lakh would be returned to the bride’s family as compensation, according to circle officer Rajesh Rai.
