Monsoon This season brings relief from the scorching heat with its cool showers and pleasant weather. But for many others, especially those who Arthritis Or other joint related problems also require more effort in this season. Joint painMany people experience discomfort during this season due to changes in barometric pressure, increased humidity, and cold temperatures, which can increase joint stiffness and swelling. In addition, the rainy season limits outdoor activities, leading to reduced physical activity, which can further aggravate joint pain.
To understand the reasons behind this pain, we contacted Dr Akhilesh Yadav, Associate Director – Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Max Hospital, Vaishali, who suggested effective strategies to reduce this discomfort.
Reason Joint Pain During Monsoon Season
Dr. Akhilesh Yadav explains the causes of joint pain during the rainy season:
1) High humidity:
The increased humidity levels during the monsoon season are one of the main causes of joint pain. The rising humidity affects the body’s synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints. This fluid can thicken due to changes in air pressure, leading to stiffness and reduced mobility in the joints, which can worsen the symptoms of arthritis patients.
2) Decrease in atmospheric pressure:
During monsoon, atmospheric pressure drops, causing swelling of joint tissues. This swelling can put pressure on nearby nerves, causing pain and discomfort. Patients with pre-existing joint problems may have a more pronounced reaction to this change in pressure.
3) Variable Temperature:
Monsoon season often brings huge fluctuations in temperature. These sudden changes can cause joint pain and muscle stiffness. In cold weather, muscles can contract, putting extra pressure on joints, which can worsen pain and stiffness in individuals with pre-existing joint problems.
4) Increased inflammation:
The cold, humid weather during monsoons can increase joint inflammation, especially in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammation causes pain, swelling, and reduced joint mobility, making daily tasks more challenging.
5) Sedentary lifestyle:
The heavy rainfall during monsoons often leads to a sedentary lifestyle. Reduced levels of physical activity can lead to weakening and stiffness of the muscles around the joints, increasing the risk of discomfort and injury.
Tips to reduce joint pain during monsoon season
Dr Akhilesh Yadav suggests some remedies to reduce joint pain and stiffness during monsoon:
1. Regular exercise: Maintaining joint health requires regular activity, even in the rain. Low-impact exercises such as yoga, swimming and walking can help maintain joint flexibility and reduce stiffness. Strength training and indoor stretches can also be helpful. Regular exercise is important to prevent the muscles around the joints from weakening.
2. Manage your weight: Carrying too much weight puts pressure on your joints, especially the spine, hips and knees. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce pain and reduce pressure on these joints. A balanced diet that includes foods rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds is also helpful in reducing inflammation and improving joint health.
3. Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential to maintain joint health, especially during monsoons when the body loses more water through sweating. Drinking plenty of water helps maintain the stability of synovial fluid, which is essential for easy joint mobility. Maintaining adequate hydration also reduces the chances of inflammation by aiding the body’s toxin-removal process.
4. Adequate rest: Getting enough rest enables the body to regenerate and repair damaged tissues, which is essential for joint health. Make sure you get 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night so your body can recover. Restful sleep also helps reduce stress levels, which can be a factor in joint discomfort.
5. Keep yourself warm: Keeping the body warm is very important to avoid joint pain and muscle stiffness during monsoon. Taking warm baths, using heating pads and wearing warm clothes can all help maintain the ideal body temperature. Another way to ease pain and reduce stiffness in the affected joints is to apply warm compresses.
6. Stay away from humidity: Cold and damp conditions can make joint pain worse. Make sure your living space is dry and ventilated, and avoid lying or sitting in damp places. For people with joint problems, using a dehumidifier can help reduce the amount of moisture in the air and provide a more comfortable environment.
He added, “If the joint pain increases or persists throughout the monsoon, it is important to visit a doctor. They may recommend appropriate treatment, including physiotherapy, medications or injections, to properly control the pain. Regular check-ups can help monitor the condition and prevent the problem.”
