The crown jewel of Gujarat, and located between Veraval and Junagadh, this 1412 sq km sanctuary is home to the majestic Asiatic lions – Gir National Park.

History of Gir National Park

At one time there were a very large number of birds of Asian origin roaming freely across the vast area of ​​Asia. lions in india Large-scale hunting in the 19th century led to alarming declines in numbers. Indian princely states, often at the behest of British colonial officials, organised lavish hunting expeditions, which decimated wildlife populations. By the end of the century, the Asiatic lion was on the verge of extinction, with only a handful surviving within the Gir Forest, the private hunting ground of Sir Muhammad Mahabat Khanji III, the Nawab of Junagadh. He undertook to protect the lions and dedicated large tracts of forest in Gir for this purpose. The establishment of the Gir Forest National Park in 1965 was the next important step in protecting this magnificent predator.

Safari Permit in Gir National Park, Zones

To experience the magic of Gir, visitors can enjoy thrilling jeep safaris inside the park. Unlike other national parks, Gir does not have zones; it has 13 routes, which are randomly allocated to the jeeps. Devaliya Interpretation Zone: If you don’t want to take risks, Gir has a section called Devaliya Safari Park, a fenced-off part of the sanctuary where bus safaris guarantee a glimpse of this wild paradise. Here, you and your kids can explore the park’s diverse landscapes, from dry deciduous forests to grasslands, and get a chance to spot leopards, antelopes, and a plethora of bird species.

You can buy the permit from the official website of the Gujarat government, but it must be booked at least 60 to 90 days in advance. An e-permit costs around Rs 1000, and it is valid for 6 people in a jeep.
The permit does not include guide and safari vehicle fees, which must be paid separately by the respective guide and safari vehicle owners. The guide fee is Rs 400 and safari vehicle fees vary for different vehicles: Type A: Rs 3500/- (6 seater new safari vehicle); Rs 4500/- (8 seater new comfortable safari vehicle); Type B: Rs 2000/- (6 seater old safari vehicle).

Beyond the Lion

While the lion hogs the limelight, Gir is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Sambar and spotted deer, chital, nilgai and wild boar are commonly seen. Bird watchers will be delighted by the presence of peacocks, pheasants and a variety of raptors.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Gir National Park is between October and April, when the weather is pleasant and the wildlife is more active.
