It is also known as Margao, the cultural capital of Margao. GoaIts second largest city. In contrast to the bustling beaches of North Goa, Margao is where period Portuguese mansions mingle with bustling fish markets, and where a lazy relaxation and an invigorating evening are celebrated in equal measure. Unlike the postcard-perfect beaches of Goa, Margao offers you a more nuanced slice of Goan life – charm and chaos in equal measure. If you’re in the sunny state, add these Margo-only experiences to your bucket list.
municipal market
If you want to understand Margao, start where life is most bustling—the Margao Municipal Market. It’s a sensory overload of color and aroma, with vendors selling everything from fresh fish to spices. You will find the sweet and sour taste of Goan cuisine in abundance in kokum baskets. Don’t miss the Pao (Goan bread) stalls (pick up some to snack on on the way).
Portuguese Mansion and Church
Head to the Borda or Comba neighbourhoods, where century-old mansions with pretty gardens, tiny windows and colonial charm are perfect for daydreaming about life in the 18th century. The Church of the Holy Spirit, with its dazzling white facade and Baroque interior, is another must-see. Built in the 1600s, this church is the heart of Margao, and trust me, even if you are not religious, you will feel a quiet kind of awe the moment you step inside.
Colva Beach
Margao may not have beaches within its limits, but it’s the perfect launchpad for some of Goa’s quieter beaches. In just 20 minutes, you can find yourself on Colva Beach, where you can enjoy the sea without the crowds of North Goa. Rent a shack, enjoy a feni and let the waves remind you that life is better when a little salty.
Goa Chitra
This museum gives you a chance to delve deeper into the rural life of Goa with its fascinating collection of traditional farming tools, ancient tools of the trade and intricately crafted wooden displays. Set against the tranquil backdrop of an organic farm, the museum also houses doors, windows, pillars, railings and other artefacts salvaged from over 300 demolished traditional houses.

where to eat in margao
Margao’s food scene is a love letter to Goan cuisine. Start your culinary journey at Martins Corner, a favorite spot for all things Goa. From their delicious pork sorpotel to crispy rava fried prawns, this is the real deal. For something a little more concise, head to longuinhos.
