Unlike some of the more tourist-heavy cities of Rajasthan, Bikaner has managed to retain its authentic outpost atmosphere. With a good mix of hotels and a rich desert scene, it attracts travelers who prefer a more relaxing option rather than the often-crowded Jaisalmer.

And now, you can see the carved windows and cobbled streets of this ‘city of a thousand mansions’, with the launch of Bikaner Heritage Walk. Launched by the Bikaner Municipal Corporation, the walk aims to preserve and celebrate the architectural and cultural treasures of the city. This walk invites locals and travelers to experience Bikaner’s heritage first-hand, while also raising awareness about the importance of conservation.

a journey through history

Bikaner’s architectural beauty, from intricately carved havelis to temples and traditional markets, is facing the threats of neglect and modern development. To address this, the Heritage Conservation Cell and Bikaner District Heritage Committee have been established. These bodies aim to restore the city’s historic sites while promoting sustainable tourism.

“Bikaner Heritage Cell aims to promote and raise awareness about the conservation and restoration of heritage buildings and sites in Bikaner. It has been established to preserve the cultural, historical and architectural heritage embodied in its historic buildings and sites,” says Mayank Manish, municipal commissioner.
District Collector Namrata Vrishni highlighted the need for community cooperation. “The District Heritage Committee will not only oversee heritage related matters but will also involve concerned stakeholders to protect the rich cultural heritage of Bikaner. It is essential for local residents and mansion owners to collaborate with local authorities to preserve the heritage and traditions of the city,” she says.

The padayatra starts from Bikaji ki Tekri, taking the participants through the heart of Purana Shahar (Old City). The bustling bangle market (Churi Bazaar) welcomes you with vibrant colours, aromatic spices and intricate textiles. From there, the walking tour passes through the Bada Bazaar and the Vegetable Market, which showcase the city’s culinary heritage. Participants can also witness the art of making juttis (traditional shoes) – a skill passed down for generations.
This route delves into the artistry of Bikaner at Marunayak Chowk, home to block and screen printing workshops. The final stop is the iconic Rampuriya Haveli, a magnificent 15th-century structure that epitomizes the grandeur of the city’s past.
Some mansions, despite adverse conditions, have been lovingly restored. Raju Mohta renovated his 200-year-old mansion in Mohta Chowk, while Sharad Lakhotia revived his century-old family home while preserving artefacts and memories. Iconic sites like Kothari Haveli and Sonawat Haveli also stand as shining examples of conservation.

Lokayan, an NGO led by cultural activist Gopal Singh, has been dedicated to saving the heritage of Bikaner for over two decades. “Bikaner, known as the city of a thousand mansions, has unfortunately lost more than 200 important buildings in recent decades. This is a sad reality for a city with such a rich cultural identity. Now is the time to act and we need organizations like Heritage Cell to help protect and preserve our heritage.”
