In the name of beauty and trendy fashion, many of us turn to tattoos, hair rebonding and dermal fillers. Although these trends are popular, dermatologists warn that they may not be as harmless as they seem. Dermatologist Dr. Gurveen Waraich recently took to Instagram to share the five beauty practices she avoids and why you should too.
Via her Instagram page, Garekars MD Dermatology Clinic, Dr. Gurween explains why some common beauty choices can be damaging your skin, hair, and overall appearance.

Tattoo: be careful with colors

Tattoos are a way to express yourself and colorful designs are especially on trend. However, Dr. Gurween recommends against getting tattoos with red and green ink.
“Getting a green or red tattoo is something I would never do,” she said, adding that these colors are the hardest to remove with laser treatment if you regret it later. Although tattoos may look great initially, removing them can be painful and expensive, especially for vibrant colors.

Hair rebonding: a big no-no

Straight, smooth hair is the dream of many people, which is why women choose hair rebonding or straightening treatments. But Dr. Gurveen warns against this.
“Rebonding or straightening your hair is suicide for your hair,” he said. The strong chemicals used in these treatments damage the hair, making them weak, brittle, and prone to breakage. Instead, she suggests embracing your natural hair and using treatments that nourish and protect your hair.

Dermal Fillers: Proceed with Caution

Dermal fillers are widely used to reduce the signs of aging, especially in areas such as fine lines around the mouth (nasolabial folds). However, Dr. Gurween recommends injecting fillers directly into these folds without addressing the overall face.
“Injecting fillers into the nasolabial folds without lifting or shaping the face is something I would never do,” she said. Improper use of fillers can lead to unnatural results and may worsen your appearance over time.

Chemical Peels: Avoid Aggressive Treatments

Deep chemical peels are often advertised as a way to rejuvenate the skin, but Dr. Gurween believes they may cause more harm than good, especially for women over 40.
“It’s not a good idea to be over 40 and have a strong, deep chemical peel session,” he says. Aggressive peels can damage mature skin, causing irritation and taking longer to heal. Choose gentle skin care treatments that suit your age and skin type.

Sunscreen: Must Do

If there’s one thing Dr. Gurwin never skips, it’s sunscreen. “I will never give up my sunscreen,” she insisted. Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays, prevents early aging and reduces the risk of skin cancer.
Many women are attracted to tattoos, rebonding and fillers because they promise instant results. Tattoos let you express yourself, straightened hair looks shinier, and fillers provide a quick way to look younger. However, these aesthetic choices can have long-term consequences, making it important to carefully evaluate the risks.
