India is known for its vast railway network, one of the largest in the world, and one of its many trains is a truly extraordinary journey – the Vivek Express, India’s longest train ride. The Dibrugarh–Kanyakumari Vivek Express, introduced in the Railway Budget 2011–12, was launched to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and is named after the visionary. Covering a staggering 4000 kilometers from the northeastern tip of Assam to the southern tip of Tamil Nadu, this incredible journey gives you the chance to explore the diverse landscapes of India, even if well beyond the confines of your coach. This is definitely a bucket-list experience for the intrepid traveller.

Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari

Vivek Express begins its marathon journey in Dibrugarh, Assam, a bustling city in the far north-east known for its tea plantations and serene landscapes. From here, the train travels across nine states across the country: Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The final destination is Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of mainland India, where three seas meet – the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.
This incredible journey takes you across a variety of landscapes, from the hills and tea plantations of Assam to the flat plains of West Bengal, the coastal beauty of Kerala and the lush Western Ghats. Each state offers its own visual and cultural flavor, making this trip not just about distance but also about discovery.
