Over the centuries, the Taj Mahal has inspired many people. Being one of the seven wonders of the world, it is a perfect blend of Persian, Islamic and Indian architecture. Tourists visit this place every day as they are mesmerized by its beauty. But do you know that there is another Taj Mahal in our country? And this is no ordinary Taj Mahal. Due to its black color it is called Black Taj Mahal.
Located at a distance of about 7 km from Buharanpur Railway Station, the Tomb of Shah Nawaz Khan is a mausoleum in Madhya Pradesh.
According to reports, it was constructed between 1622 and 1623 AD. This beautiful building is built in the shape of a Taj, although its size is quite small. The structure was named Black Taj because it was built from black colored stone found locally. It is a large dome-like structure, surrounded by a garden and square in shape, with hexagonal towers at the four corners and arched verandahs.
The actual tomb of Shah Nawaz Khan is also located below the mausoleum. It can be reached only by using a small staircase.
For those unaware, Shah Nawaz Khan was the eldest son of Abdul Rahim Khankhana, who was made the commander of the Mughal army. He died at the age of 44 and was buried on the banks of the Utavali River in Burhanpur.
The mausoleum beautifully displays the quintessential elements of Mughal architecture – including its symmetry, intricate carvings and combination of Islamic, Persian and Indian architectural styles. The central dome, with minarets on either side, resembles the Taj Mahal.
