An Indian scientist recently passed through his third kidney transplant and now lives with five kidneys.

Devendra Barlewar, a 45 -year -old scientist of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), underwent a four -hour complex surgery at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad on 8 January 2025.

This rare third kidney transplant makes surgery a significant advancement in organ transplantation in the country.

The exceptional case includes two native non-Kakshkaji kidneys, two failed transplanted kidneys, and a new working kidney in this extraordinary case.

He had been battling chronic kidney disease for 15 years starting with the diagnosis of high blood pressure in 2008, followed by two unsuccessful transplants in 2010 and 2012, later compromised by Covid-19 in 2022.

Despite the rareness of the case and surgical challenges, the multispeciality team at Amrita Hospital successfully performed the operation through infrastructure, equipment and expertise.
