A simple act of urinating can sometimes turn into a nightmare. Sometimes, pain at the end of urination (dysuria) may occur due to various reasons. We spoke to Dr. Amit Sapley, Consultant Urologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology Vizag, about what could be the reason for such a situation?
He listed some reasons below.
  • Urinary infection: Urinary infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria invade the urinary tract. Apart from this, the person may also complain of frequent urination, smelly urine, cloudy urine and sometimes fever.
  • Stones: Stones, especially if they are lodged in the ‘lower’ urinary tract (lower ureter, bladder or urethra), can cause such pain. The patient may also complain of pain in the side and vomiting.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): Organisms such as gonococci and chlamydia can be spread through unprotected sex and can cause urinary tract infections. A person may develop boils or ulcers on his genitals.
  • Bladder infection (cystitis): Inflammation of the bladder due to bacteria or chemical irritation from soap, douche can cause discomfort.
  • Interstitial cystitis: Causes discomfort in the bladder and urethra, especially during urination. Also known as painful bladder syndrome
  • Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland, either due to bacteria or sometimes without, can cause pain during urination. Additionally, the patient may have difficulty urinating, painful ejaculation, and a frequent need to urinate, especially at night.
  • Urethritis: Inflammation of the urethra, often caused by infection or irritation, can cause a burning sensation, especially at the end of urination.
  • Vaginal irritation or infection: In women, vaginal infections such as fungal infections can cause discomfort during urination. The patient may also complain of foul-smelling or unusual vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse, or mild vaginal bleeding.
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction: Tight pelvic muscles can make it difficult to urinate, causing pain during urination
  • Dehydration: Excessively concentrated urine from inadequate fluid intake can irritate the bladder lining, causing discomfort.
  • Recent sexual activity: Friction during intercourse may cause temporary discomfort when urinating
  • Bladder cancer: Along with pain during urination, there may also be blood in the urine.

When should you see a doctor?

A person should see a doctor if the pain is persistent or the following symptoms are present:

  1. blood in urine
  2. pain in side or back
  3. abnormal discharge from the penis or vagina
  4. Fever
A person should not ignore the pain while urinating. A urologist can often help identify treatments that will reduce pain.
