Famous for its greenery, waterfalls and the revered Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, the sanctuary will remain closed for tourists till September 30.

The decision has been taken in the wake of several tragic incidents, such as accidents at Bhushi dam and Tamhini ghat, where several people were swept away by the waters. That have happened in the region, especially during the monsoon season. Slippery paths, dangerous waterfalls and unpredictable weather conditions have claimed the lives of several tourists in recent years. The forest department has found it necessary to prioritise safety and prevent further loss of lives, according to the report which quoted forest range officer Vasant Chavan. According to reports, the routes that have been closed include Kondhwal Falls, Chondi Falls in Khopivali, Nahanicha Falls near Padarwadi, Subhedar Falls in Narivali and the route from Khandas to Bhimashankar. The forest department has urged tourists to respect the closure and not attempt to visit the area during this period. Alternative tourist destinations can be explored during this time and visitors can expect to return to Bhimashankar under safer conditions after the monsoon.
