On holiday, there is a warning about an increase in measles cases in Europe and other regions to visit families or relatives traveling abroad this summer.

Measles infection in Europe is at a 25 -year high, while cases are also increasing in countries like Pakistan and Nigeria.

Childhood vaccination rates in the UK that provide protection against measles, kanthamala and rubella (MMR) are still a long way below the recommended 95%, with the lowest regional rates in London have been vaccinated with more than 73%.

The UK’s Health Protection Agency is warning the holidays to ensure that they are up -to -date with their vaccination and stress that there is never a delay in vaccination.

The latest data of Ukhsa on measles infections suggests that an outbreak continues in England.

Some 109 cases were confirmed in April and 86 till now.

These cases have been mostly in unwanted children aged 10 years and below.

London has reported about half of all cases in the last four weeks.

Advisor to UK Health Security Agency, an epidemicist Dr. Vanessa Saliba says that the increase in cases in England shows what is happening abroad – and it is a matter of concern as the summer vacation season is going on.

Dr. Saliba said, “It is necessary that everyone, especially the parents of young children, check all family members that are updated with two MMR doses, especially if you are traveling for holidays in this summer or visiting family,” Dr. Saliba said.

“Measles cases are again raising in England and outbreaks are happening in Europe and many countries have close links to Britain.

“Measles spreads very easily and can be a bad disease, causing complications such as ear and chest infections and some children suffer tragically in the hospital and suffer from lifetime consequences.

“Nobody wants this for their child and it’s nothing you want to experience when you are away on vacation.”

Decline in vaccination rates in the UK – especially since the Kovid epidemic – in other countries, especially in Europe.

The World Health Organization and UNICEF reported 127,350 measles cases in the European region in 2024 – the number of cases reported during the previous year and the highest number since 1997.

This year outbreaks have been seen in many other European countries popular with Britain holidays including France, Italy, Spain and Germany.

The WHO has also reported that Romania, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Nigeria are currently one of the largest number of measles cases worldwide.

A large push has been given to improve MMR vaccination rates across the UK, but National Director for Primary Care and Community Services in NHS England. Amanda Doyle says that a lot of work is still yet to be done.

“Many children and young children are still not protected against diseases, which are infectious infections that spread very easily and can cause serious health problems.

“MMR jabs are provided free as part of the NHS routine vaccination program – and I will encourage all parents to invite or check the vaccination records if they think they can miss their child’s vaccination.”

Health experts say that anyone, whoever does not have two doses of MMR vaccine, can contact your GP surgery to book appointment and that it is never late to catch.
