Kerala Human Rights Commission Chairman Alexander Thomas calls for strict legal action against establishments violating the Food Safety Act
The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has directed the Food Safety Department to conduct regular inspections in eateries across the state and seize stale and substandard food items. According to a press release, Commission Chairman Alexander Thomas called for strict legal action against establishments violating the Food Safety Act.
The directive was issued to the assistant commissioner of the food safety department in Ernakulam, the release said.
The action follows a complaint by social activist TN Prathapan, who urged a monthly check on the quality of oil, water, fruits, vegetables, fish and meat used in cooking, especially in big hotels.
The release also said that the food safety department had submitted a report on the inspections conducted in Ernakulam district.
As part of these measures, the police, in coordination with the revenue and local self-government departments, are conducting night inspections of roadside eateries (thattukadas) twice a month, the release said.
