According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States is facing a significant measles outbreak, with 20 courts reported in 483 confirmed cases. Texas has been the most difficult hit with the health department of the state, which confirmed 400 cases till 28 March. CDC states that in 97 percent of these cases have been revealed in those who were either untouched or whose vaccination status is unknown. 75 percent of the affected people are under 19 years of age.

Apart from Texas, other states are also seeing an increase in infections. In New Mexico, the number of measles cases climbed to 44 March 29, reported a few days before 43 cases. Meanwhile, Mexico has also reported a spike in cases, which inspires an acute vaccination campaign. Mexican Health Minister, David Korshenobich stated that 43 cases have been confirmed, out of 39 northern states concentrated in Chihuahua, which are largely associated with imported infections. More than half of these cases have been revealed in children under nine years of age.

Measles is a highly infectious viral disease that spreads through respiratory drops from cough and sneezing. It initially presents flu -like symptoms, including fever, cough, flowing nose and red, water eyes. Within a few days, small white spots known as a copy spots may appear inside the mouth, followed by a characteristic red rash that starts on the face and spreads downwards throughout the body.

While measles is often self-limiting, serious complications can arise, especially in young children, pregnant women and immunocomoid individuals. These complications include pneumonia, encephalitis (brain inflammation), blindness and death, death.

Under Kennedy Junior, this outbreak has come amid a controversial step by the Department of US Health and Human Services (HHS), which has announced a plan to shut down 10,000 employees and close half of their regional offices. Kennedy, a vocal critic of vaccine, has expressed concern among public health experts by reducing the importance of vaccination against measles, a disease that was almost erased in America

His attitude on vaccines has worried health professionals who have warned that the vaccine hesitates can increase the current outbreak and lead to further public health crises. Experts say that vaccination is the most effective tool in preventing measles and its related complications.

To curb the spread of measles, the CDC strongly recommends that the individuals receive measles, kanthamala, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, providing about 97 percent protection after two doses. Other preventive measures include:

Ensure timely vaccination for children and booster dose for adults.

Separating infected persons to prevent further transmission.

Practicing good hygiene including frequent handwashing.

If outbreaks continue in the community, avoid crowded places.
