The Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Maharashtra, are an excellent example of ancient Indian art, architecture and religious devotion. Carved into the rocks of the Sahyadri hills, these 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves date from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD. In fact, the Ajanta Caves were abandoned in the 5th century AD and were not discovered by the outside world until almost 1,400 years later by a young British cavalry officer, John Smith, who was hunting tigers in the area. The caves are adorned with intricate sculptures and mesmerizing frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Buddha, Jataka stories and daily life.
