1. People with kidney problems
Coconut water is filled with potassium, an essential mineral that helps to maintain fluid balance and nerve function. However, for people with kidney disease or on dialysis, excessive potassium intake can be dangerous. Kidney regulates potassium levels, and when they do not work properly, potassium can form the blood, which can cause hyperkelemia-a condition that can cause irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness and even life-threatening complications.
2. People taking blood pressure medicines
Coconut water is known for the ability to reduce blood pressure due to high potassium content. While it is great for people with high blood pressure, it can already be problematic on blood pressure-reducing drugs such as ACE inhibitors or beta-blockers. A combination of coconut water with these drugs can reduce blood pressure, which can also cause dizziness, fainting or shock in serious cases.
3. People with diabetes should consume carefully
Although coconut water is less in sugar than soda and fruit juice, it has natural sugars that can affect blood sugar levels. People with diabetes should monitor their intake, especially if they consume many servings. Although it can have a lower glycemic index than other sweet beverages, drinking too much can still cause spikes in blood sugar levels.
4. People with cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition that affects the lungs and the digestive system, often leading to electrolyte imbalance. While coconut water is rich in potassium, people with CF often require more sodium in their diet rather than potassium. Drinking too much coconut water without balanced sodium intake can disrupt the electrolyte balance required for CF patients.
5. They suffer from allergy
Coconut allergies are rare but possible. People who allergies to tree nuts may also contain sensitivity to coconut. Symptoms can range from mild itching and inflammation to severe anaphylactic reactions. If you have a history of walnut allergies, it is best to consult a doctor before trying coconut water.
6. Athletes
While coconut water is a good natural hydrator, it does not have much sodium in the form of traditional sports drinks. Athletes that engage in long, acute workouts and sweat, may require beverages with high sodium content to effectively fill lost electrolytes. Perfectly relying on coconut water after loud exercise cannot provide enough sodium, possibly leading to hyponatramia (low sodium levels), which can cause confusion, nausea and even seizures.
7. IBS or sensitive stomach
Coconut water has natural laxative properties, which can be an issue for people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or sensitive stomach. Some individuals may experience swelling, cramps or diarrhea after drinking.
Should you avoid coconut water completely?
not necessarily! Coconut water is a magnificent natural drink, which is filled with nutrients and hydration benefits. But like the rest, it is important to consume it in moderation and consider your personal health conditions.
