Block your dates—this January 14th to 17th, Tamil Nadu It will turn into a riot of colors for Pongal, the state’s most favorite harvest festival. The word Pongal translates as ‘overflow’ in reference to the harvest festival, and also shares its name with a traditional dish made by boiling rice in milk and mixing it with jaggery.
Also known as Thai Pongal, this festival is when Tamil Nadu truly displays its heart and soul. Think pots filled with sweet Pongal (made from rice, milk and jaggery), houses decorated with colorful Kolams and villages echoing with “Pongalo Pongal”! Oh, and did we mention JallikattuThe adrenaline-packed sport of bull taming is another famous (and controversial) part of the celebrations in this state. In Chennai, Pongal celebrations often take place on the beach. Marina Beach turns into a lively hub with kite flying, traditional games and lots of food stalls. For a more local vibe, check out the nine-day festival of Koyambedu market – which has everything you need to get into the Pongal spirit. And if you like temples, Kapaleeswarar Temple and Sri Parthasarathy Perumal Temple are worth a visit.

Madurai

Madurai doesn’t just celebrate Pongal; It’s won it. The Meenakshi Amman temple becomes the heartbeat of the city with special rituals and processions that attract crowds. The streets are buzzing with folk music, dancing and food stalls offering delicious traditional dishes. Enjoy the Pongal Tourism Festival for a front row seat to Jallikattu and some nice sweet Pongal. While you are there, do not miss the Tirupparankundram Murugan Temple or the Koodal Azhagar Temple.
