Real life weight loss story: Starting your weight loss journey is not just about following a specific diet or going to the gym, but also about consistency, flexibility and keeping yourself motivated throughout the journey. Losing weight is never an easy task, especially if you have diabetes, hormonal problems or any other underlying health issues. This hinders your weight loss journey even more as the results are really slow. However, all these obstacles did not stop 32-year-old Soumya Narayanan from starting her journey.
Battling multiple health issues, including Type 1 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and limited mobility in her right hand, Saumya found a way to take control of her health. In a short period of time, she managed to lose more than 9 kilograms! Here’s how it changed his life.
Saumya’s weight loss journey started during a low phase of her life. Due to numerous health problems, both physically and mentally, she struggled to find a sustainable approach to fitness. “I have type 1 diabetes, limited mobility in my right hand, and PCOS. These challenges made it difficult for me to live a healthy lifestyle,” she says.
That’s when his sister introduced him to the cult. After exploring several options, Soumya found the Cult Transform program to be an ideal fit, especially due to her unique physical limitations. “Cult’s personal trainers, nutritionists and mindset coaches designed a plan keeping in mind my needs and limited mobility,” Soumya said.
The results were almost immediate. In just two months, Saumya saw significant changes – not only did she lose weight, but her overall health also improved. His weight dropped from 65 kg to 55 kg and his HbA1c level, a key indicator of blood sugar control, dropped from 11 to 5.4. “This was a life-changing improvement for someone who had suffered from Type 1 diabetes since the ninth grade,” he said.
What inspired you to set out on this journey?
When Saumya was asked what inspired her to embark on this journey, she pointed to repeated failures in life. “It wasn’t just about weight loss. It was about reclaiming my health after years of dealing with diabetes, seizures, PCOS and limited mobility,” she said. His determination not to let these circumstances dominate his life was his biggest motivator.
For Soumya, her family also played an important role in keeping her morale high. “My family members, especially my family doctor and the trainers at Cult, inspired me,” she explains. “An important factor was also my going to Bengaluru. It gave me a fresh start and the environment really supported my transformation.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced along the way?
No change is without obstacles and for Saumya, this journey was full of unique challenges. The abduction of his right hand, which had limited his mobility since birth, made rigorous practice difficult. Additionally, having Type 1 diabetes required her to be careful with her diet and ensure that her blood sugar levels remained stable.
However, Cult’s tailored planning made it possible for him to achieve his goals despite these limitations. “He customized everything to meet my needs — whether it was modifying exercises or creating a diet plan that worked for my condition,” she says.
Diet and exercise regimen adopted during your transformation
Soumya’s diet became an essential part of her transformation. She adopted healthy habits like drinking chia seed water in the morning, reducing her intake of white foods like rice and bread, avoiding fried foods completely, and significantly cutting down on sugar. He also included more salads in his diet and practiced portion control.
Her exercise regimen was equally conscious of her limitations, focusing on yoga, walking and full-body mobility exercises. These gentle yet effective routines allowed her to stay active without putting unnecessary strain on her body.
How has your life changed since achieving your weight loss goals?
Today Soumya’s weight is 54 kg and her health has improved a lot. “I feel fitter and more confident,” she shares. One of the most beneficial results has been the resolution of her PCOS, which has led to regular menstrual cycles. “I never thought this would be possible, but my PCOS is no more,” she says.
Their blood sugar levels have also stabilized, preventing further damage to their organs and improving their overall quality of life. “My diabetes is much more under control now. I have managed to bring down my HbA1c level, which is important for long-term health,” she adds.
What advice do you have for others who want to embark on a similar transformation journey?
When asked what advice she would give to others looking to make changes to their health, Soumya stressed the importance of self-confidence and willingness to try. “You have to believe in yourself and be willing to reach new heights, no matter what challenges you face,” she advises.
She encourages others to seek professional help if they need it, as she found her support system in Cult Transform. “Sometimes, you need experts who understand your specific needs and can guide you accordingly. It made a big difference to me.”
Now, with her fitness levels improving and confidence restored, Soumya is eager to continue her journey and inspire others to take the first steps towards their health transformations.
