Gradually, but of course we have traveled a long way to normalize medical and other mental health stigma. However, there is still a long way to go. This is a high time when we break the silence around mental health. After all, this is as important as our physical welfare. Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan, in a special conversation with Times Now Digital, opens about her mental health conflicts, her de-stressors, therapy and more.
Why do you think medical and interaction around mental health is still forbidden?
You know, I have always believed that strength is not about botting your feelings, which is about daring to accept them. But somehow, medical and mental health are still considered like a fly-subject subject. I think this is because people feel that they have to ‘handle everything on their own’ to get stronger. According to the Fee Mental Welling Survey, 55% of Indians believe that therapy is for weak, highlights permanent stigma around mental health assistance. But honestly, taking care of your brain is as important as taking care of your body. Therapy is another way to do so, it is about development, self-awareness, and to ensure that you are fine. The more we talk about it, the more we break the stigma. And trust me, nothing is cooler but to take care of yourself!
How can anyone help themselves?
This is not always easy, there are times when I have felt tired, worried and completely overwhelmed, especially in public eyes managing both my personal and professional life. But over time, I have realized the importance of determining boundaries and prioritizing myself.
Do you think self-care and mental health is connected?
Absolutely! For me, self-care and mental health walks by hand. I priorit my goodness every day, whether it is eating right, staying active, or what I consume physically and emotionally. Taking care of yourself is not just about looking good; It is about feeling good from within. So I do not hesitate to search for therapy when needed. This helps me to be balanced, gain clarity and prefer my mental good because a healthy mind is as important as a healthy body.
What about those who cannot do therapy? What should they resort?
I know that therapy is not always accessible, but can be as simple as a moment to take care of your mental goodness, jerning, meditation, exercise or breathing. Helps to surround yourself with supportive people and to do what you want to do, bringing music, or travel balance. At the end of the day, self-care is not about large gestures, it is about small, everyday options that help you feel good.
Do you think social media is also a criminal to influence people’s mental health? If yes, then how?
Yes, social media can affect mental health. While it is a great platform for connections and reactions, it also brings trolling, unrealistic comparison and continuous pressure. Negative comments and filtered perfection can affect confidence and self-values. I have learned to focus on creative response, set boundaries, and social media should not allow me to define. The key is that you use it from the mind, be right on yourself, and prioritize your mental good on noise.
What is your Go-to-stress after a long day to relax music with 34% General Z and 37% millennium in top metros?
Music is definitely a great way to relax, and I fully understand why so many people change it for relaxation. For me, de-stressing after a long day is about all balance. Sometimes, it is a deep workout to clean my brain; The second time, it is a cool moment with a book or a long, soothing shower. Self-care, whether it is through movement, mindfulness, or just doing something that I like helps me reset and recharge.
