Switzerland has unveiled what it calls an unprecedented achievement for its tourism industry World’s steepest cable carOfficially opened on December 14, 2024, the cable car connects the village of Stechelberg with Mürren at the valley floor. The entire journey takes only four minutes, climbing 775 meters on an approximately 1,194 meter long track. It has space for up to 85 passengers.
With an astonishing growth of 159.4%, this attraction is expected to become a major attraction for adventure seekers, families and even cultural travelers.
Best of all, it takes travelers to Piz Gloria – the iconic revolving restaurant featured in the 1969 James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
This new development is part of the ‘Schildhornbanen 20XX’ project which involves building a new route made up of three sections. It will eventually run from Stechelberg and Mürren via Birg to Schilthorn, reducing the current journey time from 32 minutes to around 18 minutes.
Some key features include:
  • gradient: 159.4%, steepest in the world
  • Distance: 775 meters
  • Duration: four minutes
  • Capacity: 85 passengers

It is expected that the cable car will significantly boost regional tourism – as it will attract international travelers to Stechelberg and Mürren. Local businesses including accommodation, restaurants and tour operators are likely to benefit from the increased footfall.

Meanwhile, a new cableway between Mürren and Birg was also opened at the same time as the world’s steepest cable carThe final section from Birg to Schilthorn is expected to open in March 2025.
