US health agency finds lead and cadmium in protein powder; What harm do they cause?

The Environmental Protection Agency says no level of lead is safe for humans. Cadmium is a carcinogen, toxic to your body’s heart, kidneys, intestines, brain, respiratory and reproductive systems.
“Organic protein powders contain, on average, three times as much lead and twice as much cadmium as non-organic products,” said Jacqueline Bowen, executive director of the Clean Label Project, a nonprofit dedicated to transparent food labeling that released the report. ”
According to the report, powders made from soy, rice, peas and other plants contain three times more lead than whey-based products.

According to the report, another major source of contamination in the protein powder was chocolate flavoring. “Chocolate-flavored protein powder contains four times more lead and 110 times more cadmium than vanilla-flavored powder,” Bowen said.
Despite being rich in flavonoids, antioxidants, and other beneficial minerals, dark chocolate contains high levels of heavy metals. Studies have found that at least 43 percent of six dozen dark chocolate products exceed California’s Proposition 65’s maximum allowable dosage level of 0.5 parts per million.
“Heavy metal contamination is a global food safety problem,” Bowen said. “These contaminants are basically everywhere, including things that are being touted as health foods.”
