world AIDS Day Celebrated all over the world on 1 December. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) which is caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 39.9 million people were living with HIV globally in 2023. Additionally, approximately 630,000 people died from HIV-related causes and an estimated 1.3 million people will contract HIV in 2023.
AIDS is a long-term condition caused by HIV. HIV damages the immune system, making the body less able to fight infection and disease. If HIV is not treated, it can take years for the immune system to weaken to develop into AIDS.
The Mayo Clinic says HIV is spread through genital contact, such as during sex without a condom. ‘This type of infection is called a sexually transmitted infection, also known as an STI. HIV also spreads through blood contact, such as when people share needles or syringes. It is also possible to spread the virus from a person with untreated HIV to a baby during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding.
