An exciting news for travelers is that Mysore in Karnataka is all set to install the world’s first domed LED planetarium. The planetarium is being developed by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIAP) in collaboration with the University of Mysore. Currently, it is under construction at the Chamundi Hills campus and is expected to open in September 2025.
The budget of this project is Rs 91 crore and it will have some state-of-the-art LED technology. The planetarium’s 15 meter diameter dome will be tilted at an angle of 15 degrees. According to IIAp director Annapurni Subramanian, the new LED system will offer a wider range of colors and brighter visuals than traditional projector-based setups. This is what will also enable the planetarium to provide exceptionally realistic views of the starry sky, planets and other celestial objects.
This planetarium will be part of a larger initiative called the Cosmology Education and Research Training Center (COSMOS). COSMOS aims to be a center for astronomical education, offering programs for students and teachers, as well as increasing public awareness of astronomy and cosmology.
Additionally, the planetarium will be powered by SkyExplorer, an advanced astronomical software developed by the French company RSA Cosmos. The software will control 8K LED lights, providing an incredibly detailed and lifelike experience.
