Known for its always pleasant weather and beautiful waterfalls, lush forests and gorgeous landscapes, Karnataka is a traveller’s paradise. But many people don’t know, there is also such a hidden desert in karnatakaYes that’s right!
Located in Mandya district, talakadAlso known as Talakadu, this city is one of the most ancient cities of the state. Once a beautiful vibrant town on the banks of river Kaveri, Talkad is now a hidden desert. However, the sandy area remains a mystery to most travelers. While some believe that volcanic activity in the region may have played a role in its formation, others attribute it to the changing course of the Kaveri River.
However, the story is much more than that. This interesting city has a history of 30 temples buried under the sand. It takes a few hours from Bengaluru and about an hour from Mysore to reach here. When you travel, the entire area is covered with lush green fields and water, covered with sand dunes, until you reach Talakadu.
The mystery of this incident remains unclear even after decades.
According to reports, Talakad was cursed by a vengeful queen named Allemelamma. He said, “May Talakadu be filled with sand, may Malangi become a whirlpool and Mysore kings may not have children.” It was laid on the ground in the 16th century and since then such a place has been filled with sand, although this is quite strange, especially for a place that is located on the river bank.
It is also home to ancient temples – including the Vaidyanatheshwar Temple and the Kirtinarayan Temple. Devotees frequent these temples, making the place a unique blend of spirituality and natural beauty.
How to reach Talakad?
Talakad is just 50 km from Mysore and about 140 km from Bangalore. It will take a few hours by road. Since it is a small town, it is best to visit here for a day trip.
